RESEARCH PROGRAM

Title: A particle finite element method for cutting of solids

Name: Dr. Matthias Sabel

(former student)

Project description:

Starting situation

The current implementation is based on finite deformations and a hyperelastic material model. To validate the method, results of standard FEM simulations were compared with the PFEM. The simulations were realised for test situations as well as dry cutting processes.

Approach

An important goal is to identify the physical interpretation of certain parameters used in the PFEM. The material model will be extended in order to consider inertia effects and plasticity. Also, the contact between tool and workpiece will include friction.

Expected Results

The physical interpretation of parameters should lead to a better understanding of the method and provide a prediction for a material separation. Including plasticity in the material description will enable the modelling of the cutting of metals.
